About the book
When Margaret Ager was appointed Assistant Chief in 1997, very few women in Kenya had held the office. Over the next three decades she would serve under four presidents and two constitutions — and become, to the people of Kakdhimu, simply Nyobera.
This memoir is her account of that journey: the opportunities that came with leadership, the challenges of being a woman in authority, the families she stood with in hard seasons, and the conviction that educating a girl and empowering a woman changes a whole community.
It is written for her community, for the women and girls who will lead next, and for anyone who wants to understand how public service is lived on the ground in Kenya.
Core themes
From her appointment as Assistant Chief in 1997 to three decades at the helm of Kakdhimu Location — how a village daughter learned to lead, mediate and serve.
The doors that opened, the resistance she met as a woman in uniform, and the hard choices of public office across changing eras.
Table banking, enterprise and the quiet work of helping women claim a voice, an income and a seat at the table.
Why keeping girls in school became a lifelong cause — and the families, teachers and young women who proved it worthwhile.
